January 2, New Delhi – India recorded 19,078 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, according to the health update by the Union health ministry on Saturday morning. The total number of positive cases in the country has shot up to 10,305,788.
As many as 224 coronavirus patients succumbed to the infection in a day, taking the toll in India to 1,49,218.
Meanwhile, of the total positive cases, there are 2,50,183 active Covid cases and 99,06,387 recovered cases in the country, the health ministry said.
On Friday, Delhi recorded 585 fresh Covid-19 cases and 21 new fatalities, even as the positivity rate stood at 0.73 per cent, news agency PTI quoted authorities as saying.
The infection tally in the city stood at over 6.25 lakh and death toll rose to 10,557, they said, adding over 80,000 tests were conducted the previous day.
In Chandigarh, 35 more people tested positive for the novel coronavirus, bringing the infection tally to 19,799 on Friday, according to a medical bulletin.
Kerala recorded 4,991 new cases, while 5,111 people cured of the infection on Friday.
Amid this, all states and UTs are set to test the Covid-19 vaccination roll-out plan by conducting a dry run at minimum three designated centres on Saturday.
The aim of the dry run is to test linkages between planning and implementation and to identify the challenges. The dry run will also test Co-WIN application, developed specifically for Covid-19 vaccine drive, in a field environment.
