Colombo, November 29: Naval and fishing communities have been requested to be vigilant as wind speeds can increase up to 70 -80 kmph at times, the Department of Meteorology said on Wednesday.
Very heavy rains, very strong winds and very rough seas can be expected in the deep and shallow sea areas around the island, particularly in the Western and Southern sea areas, it said.
A bad weather warning for heavy rain, strong winds and rough seas was issued by the Early Warning Centre of the Department of Meteorology, valid for the next 24 hours.
It said that the low pressure area in the vicinity of Sri Lanka has developed in to a depression and it is expected to develop further and move away from the island along the southern coast.
Heavy rains and gusty strong winds (about 60-70 kmph) are expected over the island while very heavy rain falls (above 150mm) can be expected at some places in the Southern, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva and Western province.
Heavy falls (above 100mm) can be expected at some places elsewhere, it said.
