Dhaka, June 9 (newsin.asia): Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has congratulated her niece Tulip Siddiq, Rushanara Ali and Rupa Huq for their victory in the UK general elections. President Md Abdul Hamid has also congratulated them.
The three Bangladeshi-origin politicians secured major victories for the Labor Party in the election held on Thursday.
BDNews24 reported that Tulip, daughter of Hasina’s younger sister, Sheikh Rehana, was re-elected to parliament from Hampstead and Kilburn with 34,464 votes, against her Conservative rival’s 18,904.
The 35-year-old had first won the constituency in north-west London with 23,977 votes.
Rushanara Ali, in her third victory, has won with 42,969 votes at Bethnal Green and Bow, a Tower Hamlets constituency with a large number of Bangladeshi voters. Her Conservative rival trailed behind with just over 7,000 votes.
The first Bangladesh-origin woman to be elected to British parliament, Rushanara had won with a margin of almost 25,000 votes in the previous election.
Dr.Rupa Huq, an academic of Bangladesh origin, also returned to parliament with a huge victory at west London’s Ealing Central and Acton. She got 33,037 votes while her Conservative rival could manage only 19,272.
There were 14 candidates of Bengali origin who ran in the snap election, with eight of them representing Labour. Four were independent candidates. The remaining two fought for Liberal democrats and the Friends Party.
