Colombo, March 7 (newsin.asia) – Facebook was blocked for several users across Sri Lanka on Wednesday while the social media app ‘Whatsapp’ was also reported slow after several incidents of violence was reported from Kandy, in Central Sri Lanka, since Sunday night.
Government Spokesman, Rajitha Senaratne told reporters in a weekly media briefing that a decision had been taken to block social media in some places including Facebook.
Meanwhile Telecom Regulatory Commission (TRC) of Sri Lanka has begun monitoring social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Viber, Whatsapp and YouTube as part of the government’s effort to curb hate speech in the context of the anti-Muslim riots which have shaken some towns in Kandy district.
As a result users across the country would experience a drastic drop in speed or interruptions when accessing the internet.
